Information Technology and Information Technology Enabled Service

The Information Technology (IT) and the Information Technology Enabled Service (ITES) industries have been one of the key industries in the Philippines. These industries are particularly linked with the business process outsourcing (BPO) that has been constantly growing for the past years. In 2010, the Philippines overtook India as the world leader in the stand-alone voice business service. As of this year, the Philippines’ BPO industry is on target to hit $25 billion annual gross revenue by the year 2015 after posting a growth 20 percent in 2012. This target revenue shows that the industry then will account for nearly 10 percent of the Gross Domestic Product. The industry is then also expected to create 1.3 million and 3.2 million direct and indirect employment respectively.

Cebu alongside Metro Manila, Davao, Clark and Baguio City are considered as hubs for IT and outsourcing businesses in the Philippines. Cebu at the end of 2012 had already over 100 IT/ITES companies employing about 95,000 workers. Further, Cebu has also become more than just a call center destination as non-voice operations have already outnumbered the voice operations with reference to the total number of BPO and IT companies. Data from the National Economic Development Authority of Region 7 (NEDA 7) shows that of the 98 BPO and IT companies operating in Cebu, 32 offer voice operations while 66 companies offer non-voice operations. It should also be noted that non-voice operations employ more than half or approximately 50,000 out of the 95,000 employed by the industry in Cebu.
Moreover, recent data shows that Cebu and the rest of Central Visayas revenue from the IT-BPO industry amounted to $484 million or 26.9 percent of the national total of $13 billion.
